It is very useful when you download some unofficial patch. Actually I have used it to find several trojans my local antivirus program did not find.

Hint: Use it before you calculate and save file’s MD5 hash, if file was not downloaded from a trusted site.

One tip: Hold the Shift key down and then press Start in the main Window, Md5Checker will check new md5 items only.

How to use:

1. Copy safepack.cmd to the backup folder of your setup files, e.g. E:\Setup Files.
2. (Optional) Open it using any text editor.
3. (Optional) Find and edit the following code:
   set _ext=*.dll;*.drv;*.exe;*.msi;*.sys;*.vxd
set _WinRAR=%ProgramFiles%\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe
set _password=password
set _compression=0
set _showLog=1
   _ext - File types you want to backup. Usually executable files as they may be infected by Virus, Trojan or Worm.
   _WinRAR - Full path of WinRAR. This script will call WinRAR to backup.
   _password - Set up a password that makes the backup stronger. This parameter can be empty.
   _compression - Set the compression level. 0 - Do not compress, fastest, 5 - The highest.
   _showLog - Whether show log or not. If 1, a notepad will popup with the log. Otherwise log will be saved to file and you can check it as you want.
4. Run this script. All desired files will be backup automatically. File abc.xyz will be backup to abc.xyz.zip.
   Note: The first run will take much longer since all files need to be backup.
5. After backup, all backup files will show up in the log as the following format:
   • New found files: Started with +, e.g. + E:\Setup Files\Software1\abc.xyz
   • Files changed since last backup: Start with *, e.g. * E:\Setup Files\Software1\abc.xyz
   • Files failed to backup: Start with ?, e.g. ? E:\Setup Files\Software1\abc.xyz
6. For file changed since last backup, SafePack will create a new backup and rename its last backup to filename.#.zip. For example, last backup of abc.xyz will be renamed to abc.xyz.0.zip, and a new backup abc.xyz.zip will be created.
   Renaming last backup can make sure you will not delete/overwrite anything by incorrect manipulation.
   After backup, you should go to its containing folder and take a look. If you did update this file, you can delete the backup of backup (e.g. abc.xyz.0.zip) safely. If it was modified by unknown program like Virus, you should delete it as well as its new backup, rename its old backup back, and restore file from it.
7. For file failed to backup, you should check and fix the following possible reasons:
   1. Could not rename last backup, target filename filename.0.zip ~ filename.9.zip already exist.
   2. Do not have permission to rename file.
8. You can copy this customized script somewhere else you’d like to backup files.

Platform: Windows XP/2000/Server 2003

Download: SafePack.zip, downloaded 40 times.

Limitation: Could not handle file name contains % and !. It is a limitation of windows command line script. You need to backup those files manually.

For developer: Some conditional statements do not look pretty, I have to write like that to handle file name contains ( and ).

Configurate download software step by step (I’m using FlashGet as a sample)

1. Open FlashGet, click the Opt.
   
2. Go to the Anti-Virus page
   
3. Set it up
   1) Enable it
   2) Enter the path of Md5Checker
   3) You may want to modify the file types
   

We are ready to download something

1. Now try to download something! (Use your download software, not IE)
2. After downloaded, you will see Md5Checker is popup with downloaded file and its calculated MD5 checksum:
   
3. Compare the MD5 checksum with known one (if available)
4. If the checksum has no problem, click the S.Each to save

Make things organized

• To go to the downloads folder quickly, you can select the file in Md5Checker and then click the Locate
• You can move the downloaded files with their each MD5 file to the place you categorize files
  The S.Each command above can make the moving much easier
• After moved, you may want to combine multiple MD5 files in the target folder. Just drag-and-drop them into a new Md5Checker window without auto checking, and then click the Save. A new MD5 file containing all MD5 checksums will be created
  (Why combine: You can check multiple files by one double-click)
  After combination, you can delete individual MD5 files in the Explorer. Or select all files in the Md5Checker, mark them as discarded, and then click the S.Each.

What’s new in version 3.2.3:

1. New: Check for Updates command.
2. Fix: Compare MD5 dialog should recognize lower case characters.
3. Fix: Combo boxes should not be fix width.
4. Update: Separate Unknown category into Unknown & Loaded.
5. Update: Add *.zip & *.rar by default.

Regarding to #4, otkin asked how to check only new files (files have never been checked), I use this update to make this process easier:

1. Add the containing folder into Md5Checker WITHOUT auto starting
2. Switch to the Loaded category
3. Remove all listed items <- Now only new files are left.
4. Start checking

But I’m still thinking about a one-click solution, maybe it will be implemented in the next version.

Compare MD5 with inputed/pasted one:

1. Select one md5 item with calculated MD5 checksum
2. Press F2, use the Edit | Compare MD5 menu item, or use the Compare MD5 right-click context menu item to bring up the Compare MD5 dialog
3. Or you just double click the md5 item
4. Input/paste MD5 in the lower edit control and watch the result in the top-right edit control

Compare two files’ MD5 checksums:

1. Select two md5 items with calculated MD5 checksums
2. Press F2, use the Edit | Compare MD5 menu item, or use the Compare MD5 right-click context menu item to bring up the Compare MD5 dialog
3. Watch the result in the top-right edit control

Other tip:
You can select other md5 items without closing the Compare MD5 dialog.

Tip to compare MD5 checksums manually:
The MD5 algorithm determines that the MD5 checksum will become totally different even if the file has been changed a bit. For instance, it may change from C3FCD3D76192E4007DFB496CCA67E13B to 56785C60518BBA6B4F895CB73628C491, but to D3FCD3D76192E4007DFB496CCA67E13B? Scarcely possible. Therefore, when you compare MD5s manually, comparing the first/last a few characters is fine. If you are still not so sure, use the Compare MD5 dialog.

Save Each command:
This command is kind of common usage. It will create MD5 file for each checked file using the same file name plus an MD5 extension. For example, create MD5 file ABC.xyz.md5 for file ABC.xyz and store ABC.xyz’s MD5 checksum in the MD5 file.

Unlocker is the solution!
1. Simply right click the folder or file and select Unlocker

Code page:
Md5Checker uses system’s standards and formats setting to convert between Unicode and MBCS when save/load by default. If there are any characters your system setting cannot recognize, the path of file will not be saved/loaded correctly.

In Md5Checker 3.2, you can select an appropriate code page in the Options dialog, and do not have to change the system setting to suit every software.

Send To menu:
Send To menu is a convenient way to add a few files into a program. For instance, if you select multiple files in the Explorer and right click, and then select the context menu item - Check in Md5Checker, Explorer will launch multiple instance of Md5Checker like this: Md5Checker file1, Md5Checker file2… But if you use the Send To menu, Explorer will launch one instance of Md5Checker and pass these files to it like this: Md5Checker file1 file2…
Using Send To menu has one weakness - cannot add lots of files at one time, because the system has a command line length limitation. But don’t worry, you can always use Add command or drag-and-drop to add lots of files.
